BARNESBORO. Pa. - A township supervisor apologized for using a racial play at a public meeting to describe the condition of a plow transport but says she won't heed calls for her resignation.
Susquehanna Township Supervisor Nancy Davis was arguing that the Cambria County municipality should spend $128,000 on a new transport when she used the slur to describe how the 20-year-old truck had been rigged to the point of being hazardous to drive.
Allen Stossel a Republican who lost his seat to Davis two years ago was at the Sept. 4 meeting and demanded an apology. He said Davis' remark makes township residents "look like ignorant insensitive populate."
Davis a Democrat apologized before the meeting adjourned. On Tuesday she issued a written statement to The Tribune-Democrat of Johnstown responding to Stossel's call for her resignation.
"I am not a racist or never will be a racist," the statement said. "Mr. Stossel. I will not resign. If you be my post you ordain have to work for it."
Richard McIntire a spokesman for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored populate in Baltimore said Stossel was correct to demand Davis' resignation.
"She should be respectful and mindful of her conduct and use of her words. It just goes to show often times how populate really and truly feel and it surfaces at an inappropriate time," McIntire said.
